If there’s one thing we learned this year, it’s to expect the unexpected! Luckily, the year is coming to an end, and we get to cap it off with yet another warm, joyful holiday season. And while some of our holiday celebrations may look a little bit different this year, they’ll be special nevertheless. So in order to embrace this year of change, we’re throwing out some fun holiday tradition ideas you can start in 2020!
Board Game Tournament
If there’s anything that will capture the attention of your family members (even the teenagers…) It’s good old fashioned competition. In an effort to get everyone off their phones, gather with your loved ones for a board game tournament! Fill your lineup with a mix of both classic and new games, and be sure to have a prize for the winner!
Cookie Decorating Contest
Everyone loves Christmas cookies! If your family is filled with bakers, have everyone come with freshly baked cookies, and host a taste test to see which is the tastiest recipe! However, if your family isn’t the best at baking, you can still join in on the fun! Bake a large batch of sugar cookies, and have everyone take their shot at decorating, to compete in a decorating contest! There can be several categories, like most unique, funniest, or most traditional!
Host a Holiday Swap
Cookie swaps are traditional, but we’re shaking things up! Each year, host a holiday swap, where everyone brings a pre-owned, specified item (coffee mugs, sweaters, puzzles… it can be different every year!), and a white elephant-style game is played. It’s a fun way to give and receive that doesn’t require you to buy anything, and promotes “re-gifting” items that are new to others, and receiving items that are new to you!
Hide the Christmas Pickle
A little known American tradition! On Christmas Eve night, someone will secretly hang a pickle ornament in the Christmas tree, aiming to hide it. When everyone wakes on Christmas morning, there is a race to see who will find it first. The best part? Whoever finds it receives a special gift!
