Surviving Daylight Savings: How to Stay Productive

Surviving Daylight Savings: How to Stay Productive

While fall is a beloved season, with it comes daylight savings time. Many dread it, and others don’t seem to mind. But whether or not you’re for or against shifting the clocks back, it’s something that must be done!

As many of us know, “fall back” means that the sun rises earlier, and the sun sets earlier. The original idea behind this was that people could get up earlier, and go to bed earlier- shifting the time frame in which they did work. However, in this day in age, many of us run on strict time schedules that we can’t alter. This can lead to decreased productivity and seasonal mood shifts due to the lack of daylight. Luckily, we have a few simple tips to help you get back on track and make the most of this season.

If you work an 8-5 job, you may not have much opportunity to see the sun during a typical workday. Overtime, this can begin to negatively affect your mood, and even your body’s internal clock, leading to fatigue and lethargy. This is known as seasonal depression. And so, it’s up to you to actively seek out the sun when you can- whether it be on your lunch break or a sunrise walk. Any bit of daylight helps!

Maintain a consistent sleep cycle, and wake up earlier. When the sky gets dark at 5pm, it can be tempting to stop work and head to bed early, leaving a long list of to-dos. Instead, find a bed time that works for you and stick to it every night. And for those really wanting to maximize your daylight hours, waking up earlier! This will allow you to finish work earlier, leaving you with a few hours of sunlight to enjoy after a long day. Figure out when you need to go to bed in order to get at least eight hours of sleep, and awake at your desired time.

Incorporate movement into your day. Especially if you have an office job, shorter daylight hours can really affect your energy levels. Perhaps you’re a runner and it’s too dark to run after you get off work. Even if it’s a small effort, figure out a way to work some amount of movement into your day. It can be as simple as trying out a standing desk, taking a mid-day walk or climbing a few levels of stairs. Additionally, you could do a morning workout, whether it be yoga at home or a trip to the gym. Anything to get your heart beating and your adrenaline pumping!

With some of these easy tips and tricks, you can get your productivity back on track this fall!
